Thanks, Meg, for reading and writing! And yes, give yourself a treat and read "Eat Pray Love." I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I, and so many other, did.

What a great post! I'm one of the few people who have yet to read anything by Gilbert, though Eat Pray Love has been on my radar for a while. I'm looking forward to starting it someday (hopefully soon!) and then picking up Committed. How awesome you saw her speak -- and what a big crowd! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I really loved Sir Walter Scott's "Ivanhoe"! Have any of you read this wonderful book?

I loved both of Elizabeth Gilbert's books and really appreciate your reflective and thoughtful commentary on Committed - and the extrapolation to the commitment to the writing process, and others. Thank you!

I love the ideas you present here, Elizabeth. Mostly that we can start with imperfection, and work our way towards something that feels authentic and right.

I just finished reading Committed and really loved it. I plan to write a little something about it. I appreciate Gilbert's brand of honesty and humility (even in the wake of tremendous literary success) and how she massages her doubts about commitment through the course of the story. I am hesitant to admit this, but I never finished EPL, but I plan to now. Thanks for this wonderful post.

Both books sound intriguing, Eat, Pray, Love and Committed.

There is so much in this post even though I haven't read the books, that I find myself pausing to review my own creative goals and life. And I'm finding it somewhat painful.

While I'm happy right now with my life choices, my own "best life" I feel at times, is quite apart from my own dear family and 4 young children.

It feels odd, contradictory, oxymoronic, but the honest truth. Reconciling my dreams with my reality is a life challenge.

What an incredible essay! I got Committed just today and I am excited to read it. I was mixed about EPL - but all those opinions have been hashed and rehashed to death.

I enjoyed your discussion about how when we are not being true to ourselves everything we do seems to be so much harder. Even though it has been painful for me to fight my way back a path that makes me happier - I don't feel like am pushing a boulder up hill anymore. Just a big rock. ;)

I loved the book when I read it -- and loved her. But after the fact, little bits of doubt creeped in. When she was on Oprah for the first time and Richard from Texas joined her, I almost peed my pants I was so excited. But as the interview progressed, I got the strange sense that Richard did not like her -- or he he did not like being there -- or he didnt buy all the stuff she wrote -- or some combination. This made me wonder if she sold out -- and took unnecessary poetic license in telling her story? Who is to say? I probably wont read committed for that reason -- but I reallt did enjoy EPL when I read it.
